The Relationships between Emotional Inteligence, Cultural Empathy and Cultural Competency in Nursing Students

Abstract

Purpose: This study investigated nursing students¡¯ emotional intelligence, cultural empathy and cultural competency and its relationships in order to examine their effects upon cultural competency.

Methods: Data were collected from nursing students in A universitiy in B City, and analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, Scheffe test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression analysis.

Results: Emotional intelligence had a positive correlation with cultural empathy (r=.396, p£¼.001), and emotional intelligence had a positive correlation with cultural competency (r=.301, p£¼.001). Cultural empathy had a positive correlation with cultural competency (r=.385, p£¼.001). These variables explained 27.4% of total variance on cultural competency.

Conclusion: Therefore, in order to increase the cultural competency of nursing students, it is necessary to design curriculum and subject including strategies to enhance cultural empathy.
